Golf in Ayrshire

February 24, 2008

Ayrshire is known for its many golf courses including courses that regularly stage the Open Championship.    Ayrshire’s beautiful countryside offers brilliant backdrops to the many courses.

The Royal Troon Golf Club is widely accepted as the most demanding of any Course on the Championship rota.  The golfer can choose from the Old Course, the Portland Course, or the Craigend Course.  The Old Course is challenging with the wind and deep rough interspersed with grose and broom.  The back nine is extremely difficult because of the prevailing north-westerly winds.

The Portland Course at the Royal Troon Golf Club is shorter and more sheltered than the Old Course. The Course is mixed with Par 3’s and 5’s for a well balanced game.  The Craigend Course is perfect for junior and elderly golfers, offering a perfect Course for family fun.

The Westin Turnberry Resort offers three Courses to choose from.  The sea is the back drop to these beautiful Courses.  The Ailsa Championship Course is one of the finest Courses in the world.  The ninth hole on the Ailsa Course is Turnberry’s trademark.  It features a remote tee set on a rocky promontory on the edge of the sea.  In fact the path to the ninth hole tee and the tee shot itself should not be taken by those of a nervous disposition.

The Kintyre Championship Course at the Westin Turnberry Resort is littered with glorious views of Kintyre, Arran, and Turnberry Lighthouse.  The last Westin Turnberry Resort Golf Course is the Arran Course.  This Course was designed specially for Collin’s team of P.G.A. professionals.  The course allows the professionals the opportunity to share tips and advice.  Used as a training ground, the Arran Course is perfect for all golfers novice and advanced alike.  It is the perfect introduction to Links golf.
